Rajkot spent decades with an airport you could reach in ten minutes, because it sat inside the city. That one no longer takes scheduled flights. Since September 2023 they go from Hirasar, out on the Ahmedabad highway, and the difference is roughly 35 km and three quarters of an hour.
That single fact catches more people out than anything else about it. A habit built on the old airport — leave after breakfast, be at the gate in twenty minutes — does not survive the move.
We drive it several times a day in both directions. What follows is the part that matters to someone catching a flight or coming off one, rather than a description of the building.
Where it actually is
Hirasar is north-east of Rajkot on the Ahmedabad road, past Kuvadva. If you are driving from Ahmedabad you reach the airport before you reach the city, which is worth knowing: a pickup there is not a detour, it is on the way.
The codes are HSR on a ticket and VAHS on a flight plan. Some booking sites still carry RAJ or RJK, which belonged to the old city airport. If you are offered both, HSR is the one with the flights.
How long to leave
Three quarters of an hour of driving is the honest figure in normal traffic, and it is a dependable road: four-lane, no ghats, nothing between the city and the turning to slow you down.
What is not dependable is getting out of Rajkot itself between eight and ten in the morning. Add twenty minutes if you are starting from the old city, and more on a festival day.
Our drivers plan on two hours before a domestic departure and three before an international one, counted from your door rather than from the terminal.
Coming off a flight
Give us the flight number rather than a time. We track the arrival, so a delay costs you nothing in waiting and the driver sets off for the terminal when the aircraft actually lands.
Late arrivals are ordinary here and the fare does not change after dark. The booking desk answers through the night.
Straight on from arrivals
A good many people landing at Hirasar are not stopping in Rajkot at all. The airport sits on the right side of the city for Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity, and on the far side for Dwarka, Somnath and Gir — though only by the width of Rajkot.
Said at the time of booking, an onward journey is one outstation trip rather than an airport drop and a second hire the next morning: cheaper, and one less thing to arrange in a city you have just landed in.
The old airport
Rajkot Airport, in the city off the Jamnagar road, is the one older relatives will direct you to. It no longer handles scheduled passenger flights; those moved to Hirasar in September 2023.
If a driver, a hotel or a courier says “the airport” without naming it, it is worth asking which one they mean.
