Route: Ahmedabad, Viramgam, Halvad, Samakhiali, Bhuj.
Bhuj is the way into Kutch, and Kutch looks like nowhere else in India — a salt desert that floods every monsoon and dries to a white crust every winter. From Ahmedabad it is 335 km and about six hours, running north-west past Viramgam and Halvad before crossing into the district at Samakhiali.
Almost everyone travels between November and February, when the Rann Utsav tent city is running at Dhordo and the White Rann is at its best under a full moon. Once you are there, distances stay large — Dhordo is another 80 km north, Dholavira five hours east — so having the car and driver with you for the days you are in Kutch matters more here than on most routes.
What to see on the Ahmedabad to Bhuj route
- 01
White Rann at Dhordo
Eighty kilometres north of Bhuj. Salt flats to the horizon, best at sunset and on full-moon nights. A permit is needed.
- 02
Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal
The royal palaces in Bhuj — a hall of mirrors and a Gothic clock tower, both still marked by the 2001 earthquake.
- 03
Kalo Dungar
The highest point in Kutch, looking out across the entire Rann, with the Dattatreya temple at the top.
- 04
The craft villages
Nirona for rogan art, Bhujodi for weaving, Ajrakhpur for block printing — all within an hour of Bhuj.
- 05
Hamirsar Lake
The old reservoir at the centre of Bhuj, and where the town walks in the evening.
Good to know
- The Rann permit is issued at the Bhirandiyara checkpost and needs photo ID for everyone in the car.
- Winter full-moon nights book out weeks ahead. Fix your dates before anything else.
- Summer in Kutch is severe, and through the monsoon the Rann is underwater. November to February is the season.
- Dholavira is a UNESCO-listed Harappan city but five hours beyond Bhuj — treat it as its own day.
FAQ
Ahmedabad to Bhuj — frequently asked questions
What is the Ahmedabad to Bhuj cab fare?
From ₹4,000 one-way in a sedan and ₹5,000 in an Ertiga, including fuel, driver allowance and taxes. Tolls and parking at actuals. For Kutch we usually suggest the Ertiga, since the distances inside the district add up quickly.
How far is Bhuj from Ahmedabad?
335 km, about six hours via Viramgam, Halvad and Samakhiali. Dhordo and the White Rann are a further 80 km north of Bhuj.
Can the car stay with us in Kutch?
Yes, and on this trip it is the sensible way to do it. Dhordo, Kalo Dungar and the craft villages are spread over a wide area with little public transport. Give us your dates and we will quote the drive and the local days together.
When should we go?
November to February. The Rann Utsav runs in that window, the weather is comfortable and the salt flats are dry and white. Outside it, the Rann is either flooded or the heat is punishing.
