Two hours on one of the best roads in the country. The Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway was among India’s first, and it makes this 110 km run so straightforward that a great many people do it and come back the same day — meetings, university visits, hospital appointments, family lunches.
Vadodara, still widely called Baroda, was the Gaekwad capital and spent accordingly. Laxmi Vilas Palace is about four times the size of Buckingham Palace and remains a private home, which tells you most of what you need to know about the place.
What to see on the Ahmedabad to Vadodara route

Built in 1890, still lived in. The durbar hall and grounds are open, and the audio guide is genuinely good.

A hundred acres in the city centre with a museum, a planetarium and a miniature railway.

Good to know
- A same-day return is easy here. Ask for a round trip and the car and driver wait for you.
- Laxmi Vilas is closed on Mondays and sometimes for private functions — check before building a day around it.
- Champaner deserves half a day. Weekend ropeway queues at Pavagadh are long.
