Route: Ahmedabad, Himatnagar, Shamlaji, Dungarpur, Udaipur.
Udaipur is the reason a great many people leave Ahmedabad for a weekend. Five hours north on NH-48, across the Rajasthan border, and into a city built around a chain of artificial lakes the Mewar rulers dug in the 1500s — which is why it looks the way it does and nowhere in Gujarat quite matches it.
The drive is one of the more pleasant long runs in the region. Flat farmland as far as Himatnagar, then the Aravallis start and the road climbs and bends through hill country past Shamlaji and Dungarpur. We run it most weekends through the winter, and the cars go loaded — this is a family trip more often than a business one.
What to see on the Ahmedabad to Udaipur route
- 01
City Palace
The largest palace complex in Rajasthan, added to by 22 successive rulers over four centuries. Half a day, easily.
- 02
Lake Pichola and Jag Mandir
The boat ride at sunset is the thing everyone comes for, and for once it deserves the reputation.
- 03
Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace
On a hilltop above the city, inside a wildlife sanctuary. Go for the last hour of daylight.
- 04
Shamlaji, on the way
An 11th-century Vishnu temple roughly 110 km in, and the usual halt on this road.
- 05
Saheliyon ki Bari
A garden of fountains and lotus pools built for the royal women, and a cool hour in the middle of the day.
Good to know
- October to March is the season. May and June are punishing and the lakes drop.
- The Pichola sunset boat sells out in peak season — buy at the City Palace jetty earlier in the day.
- You cross into Rajasthan at Ratanpur; there is nothing to do but it is where the road surface changes.
- Two nights is right for Udaipur. One means seeing the City Palace and little else.
