Route: Ahmedabad, Viramgam, Halvad, Samakhiali, Gandhidham.
Gandhidham exists because of Partition. It was built from nothing in the late 1940s to settle Sindhi families who had lost their homes, named for Gandhi, who supported the plan — and it grew into the commercial centre of Kutch because Kandla, one of India’s largest cargo ports, sits right beside it.
That is what most of this traffic is: shipping agents, freight forwarders, factory visits, and families travelling to Adipur next door. It is 290 km from Ahmedabad, about five and a half hours, and it also works as a staging point for anyone continuing into Kutch proper.
What to see on the Ahmedabad to Gandhidham route
- 01
Kandla Port
Deendayal Port, among the busiest cargo handlers in India, and the reason most people make this trip.
- 02
Adipur
The twin township laid out alongside Gandhidham at the same time, and still the residential half.
- 03
Onward to Bhuj
About an hour further west, with the White Rann roughly three hours on from there.
- 04
Mandvi beach
Around two hours away — the cleanest beach in Kutch, with the old wooden shipbuilding yard still working.
- 05
Samakhiali junction
Where the road forks for Bhuj or Gandhidham, and the natural break on the drive.
Good to know
- Kandla is a restricted area; vehicle entry needs a pass arranged by whoever you are visiting. We drop at the gate.
- Port traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings — build in extra time for an early appointment.
- Continuing to Bhuj or the Rann? Book it as one outstation trip so the car stays with you.
- There is little on the road between Halvad and Samakhiali; stop before it rather than hoping.
