Route: Diu, Una, Visavadar, Junagadh, Rajkot.
Diu to Rajkot is the long one: 260 km and about five hours, inland off the coast through Una and Visavadar, along the southern edge of Gir, then down to Junagadh and up the highway.
Nearly everyone making this drive is leaving for good — Diu's own airport handles very little, so Rajkot is the practical way out of this corner of the coast. That makes the booking less about the road and more about what you are catching at the other end.
What to see on the Diu to Rajkot route
- 01
Off the island
Diu joins Gujarat by the causeway at Ghoghla, and there is a check post on it, because Diu is a Union Territory and Gujarat is not.
- 02
Nothing from the off-licence
Diu sells alcohol and Gujarat is a dry state. Carrying a bottle across that check post is an offence rather than an oversight, and it is your journey it ends.
- 03
Una and the forest edge
The road inland runs along the southern boundary of Gir. Early and late you are in leopard country, and the drivers take it slowly for good reason.
- 04
Visavadar
The turn for Sasan Gir, about two hours in. If a safari is going to happen on this trip, it happens here.
- 05
Junagadh, then the highway
Girnar rising on your left, and then NH-27 for the last hundred kilometres — the quickest stretch of the day by a distance.
Good to know
- Do not carry liquor out of Diu. Gujarat is dry, the check post is real, and this is the single most common mistake made on this road.
- Five hours means leaving Diu by eight if you have an afternoon flight from Rajkot, and Hirasar is another 35 km past the city.
- A Gir safari has to be booked ahead and runs at dawn and dusk, so it only fits this drive if you stay the night at Sasan.
- The forest stretch is deliberately slow after dark. Leaving late means nearer six hours than five.
- Somnath is on the coast road rather than this one. Say so when you book if you want it, and the driver plans a different route.
FAQ
Diu to Rajkot — frequently asked questions
What is the Diu to Rajkot taxi fare?
From ₹4,000 one-way in a sedan and ₹4,500 in an Ertiga, with fuel, driver allowance and taxes included; tolls and parking at actuals. The same fare applies in the other direction.
How long is the drive from Diu to Rajkot?
About five hours for 260 km through Una, Visavadar and Junagadh — nearer six if you are crossing the Gir stretch after dark.
Can we stop at Gir on the way?
Yes, the Visavadar turn is on this road. A safari itself needs booking in advance and runs at dawn or dusk, so in practice it means a night at Sasan rather than a stop.
Is there anything to declare when leaving Diu?
Only alcohol, and the answer is to leave it behind. Diu permits liquor and Gujarat does not, and the check post at the causeway does check. There is no other paperwork.
