Route: Rajkot, Gondal, Jetpur, Junagadh, Keshod, Veraval, Somnath.
Somnath is the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the shortest of the major pilgrimage runs from Rajkot — 185 km, about three and a half hours, and comfortably a day trip if you start early. The road runs south through Gondal and Jetpur, skirts Junagadh with Girnar rising on your left, and reaches the coast at Veraval.
Most people book this one for the evening. The sound and light show at the temple runs after dark and the last stretch along the coast at dusk is the best part of the drive. Our drivers will time the run so you arrive with enough of the evening left.
What to see on the Rajkot to Somnath route
- 01
Somnath Temple
Rebuilt seven times, most recently in 1951. The arrow pillar on the seaward side claims an unobstructed line to Antarctica.
- 02
Bhalka Tirth
Where Krishna was struck by the hunter’s arrow, about 5 km from the main temple and usually far quieter.
- 03
Triveni Sangam
The meeting of the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers with the sea — a short walk from Bhalka and a traditional part of the darshan.
- 04
Girnar, near Junagadh
Roughly halfway. The ropeway cuts a climb of some 4,000 steps to a few minutes, if you have the time to divert.
- 05
Gondal
Forty kilometres out and worth an hour — the Naulakha Palace and the old royal car collection are right by the road.
Good to know
- The evening aarti and the light show that follows are the high point; aim to arrive by late afternoon.
- Phones, cameras and bags are not permitted inside. The cloakroom exists but the queue is real — leave things in the car.
- Somnath pairs naturally with Gir, an hour away. Many customers book the two as a single overnight trip.
- Shravan and Mahashivratri bring very large crowds. Worth planning around, or leaning into, depending on what you want.
