  5. Gir (Sasan)

Route: Rajkot, Jetpur, Junagadh, Visavadar, Gir (Sasan).

Gir is the only place on earth where the Asiatic lion still lives in the wild, and at 165 km it is one of the closest genuinely remarkable places to Rajkot — about three and a half hours through Jetpur and Junagadh, then into the forest belt past Visavadar.

The thing to understand before booking is that the safari runs on fixed slots, permits are issued online and in limited numbers, and the park closes entirely through the monsoon. Getting the timing right matters more here than on any other route we run, and our drivers will tell you plainly what is and is not achievable on the day you have in mind.

What to see on the Rajkot to Gir (Sasan) route

  1. 01

    Gir National Park safari

Three slots a day from Sasan gate. Permits are booked online in advance and the early morning slot gives the best sightings.

  2. 02

    Devalia Safari Park

A fenced interpretation zone a few kilometres away, with near-certain sightings. The fallback when main-park permits are gone.

  3. 03

    Kamleshwar Dam

Inside the park, full of marsh crocodiles, and usually part of the longer safari routes.

  4. 04

    Junagadh, on the way

Uparkot Fort, the Ashokan rock edicts and Mahabat Maqbara are all within a few kilometres of the highway.

  5. 05

    Somnath, an hour on

Close enough that most people pair the two. Gir in the morning, Somnath for the evening aarti.

Good to know

  • The park is closed from around mid-June to mid-October for the monsoon. Devalia usually stays open — confirm before you travel.
  • Safari permits go on sale online well ahead and weekend slots disappear quickly. Book the permit first, then the cab around it.
  • The morning slot starts around 6 am, which means leaving Rajkot at roughly 2:30 am or staying at Sasan the night before. Most people stay.
  • December to March is the best weather and the best sightings. April and May are hot but the lions come to the waterholes.
