Route: Dwarka, Porbandar, Madhavpur, Chorwad, Somnath.
This is the leg that joins the two halves of the Saurashtra pilgrimage — Dwarka, one of the four Char Dham, to Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is 235 km down the coast, about four and a half hours, and it is the most scenic road in this part of Gujarat: the Arabian Sea on your right for most of it.
Almost nobody does it in isolation. It sits in the middle of a trip that usually runs Rajkot or Ahmedabad to Dwarka, along this coast to Somnath, and home — which is why we are most often asked to quote the whole circuit rather than this stretch alone. We are happy to do either.
What to see on the Dwarka to Somnath route
- 01
Porbandar
Roughly halfway. Gandhi was born here, and Kirti Mandir stands on the spot — the natural lunch halt on this road.
- 02
Sudama Temple
Also in Porbandar, and the only major temple in India dedicated to Sudama, Krishna’s childhood friend.
- 03
Madhavpur beach
Where Krishna is said to have married Rukmini. Quiet, wide and almost empty outside the spring fair.
- 04
Chorwad
The old summer palace of the Junagadh Nawabs, on a stretch of coast that sees very few visitors.
- 05
Somnath at the end
Time the arrival for the evening aarti and the light show that follows it.
Good to know
- Leave Dwarka after morning darshan and you will reach Somnath in good time for the evening aarti.
- This road is better than the inland route and barely longer. Ask for the coast road when you book.
- Porbandar is the only substantial stop; eat there rather than counting on somewhere further on.
- Booking Dwarka, this leg and Somnath as one circuit costs less than three separate trips and keeps the same driver.
FAQ
Dwarka to Somnath — frequently asked questions
What is the Dwarka to Somnath taxi fare?
From ₹4,000 in a sedan and ₹4,500 in an Ertiga, including fuel, driver allowance and taxes. Tolls and parking at actuals. The same fare applies in the Somnath to Dwarka direction.
How far is Somnath from Dwarka?
235 km by the coast road through Porbandar, about four and a half hours including a stop.
Can you arrange the whole Dwarka and Somnath circuit?
Yes, and it is how most people book it — usually Rajkot or Ahmedabad out to Dwarka, down the coast to Somnath, and back. One booking, one car, one driver, and it costs less than arranging the legs separately.
Is Porbandar worth stopping at?
It is the obvious halt and it earns the stop. Kirti Mandir, built beside the house where Gandhi was born, and the Sudama Temple are both a few minutes apart and need about an hour between them.
