Route: Rajkot, Botad, Sihor, Bhavnagar.

Bhavnagar sits on the Gulf of Khambhat, 170 km south-east of Rajkot and about three and a half hours by road. It was a princely state and a working port long before either, founded in 1723, and the old city still reads that way — wide planned streets around a hilltop temple, with the sea a few kilometres out.

Most of our bookings on this road are not really for Bhavnagar itself. They are for what surrounds it: Palitana, where 863 Jain temples crown Shatrunjaya hill, and Velavadar, one of the few places in India where you can reliably watch blackbuck at speed across open grassland. Both are close enough to pair with the city in a single trip.

What to see on the Rajkot to Bhavnagar route

  1. 01

    Palitana and Shatrunjaya

About 55 km on. Some 863 marble temples at the top of roughly 3,800 steps — one of Jainism’s most sacred sites, and a serious climb.

  2. 02

    Velavadar Blackbuck National Park

Around 65 km away. Open grassland with blackbuck, nilgai and one of the largest harrier roosts in the world.

  3. 03

    Takhteshwar Temple

On a hillock in the middle of Bhavnagar, with a view across the city to the gulf. Ten minutes, and the best orientation you will get.

  4. 04

    Nishkalank Mahadev

A Shiva temple standing in the sea at Koliyak, reachable on foot only at low tide. Time it wrong and there is nothing to see.

  5. 05

    Victoria Park

Half a square kilometre of reclaimed scrub forest inside the city, good for an early walk before the heat.

Good to know

  • Palitana is climbed before sunrise — the steps are exposed and there is no shade by mid-morning. Leave Bhavnagar by 4 am.
  • Palitana town is strictly vegetarian by law, and no food at all may be carried up the hill.
  • Check the tide table before going to Nishkalank Mahadev; the causeway is underwater for most of the day.
  • Velavadar is at its best from November to March, at dawn or in the last hour before dusk.

170 km, about three and a half hours by road through Botad and Sihor.
