Route: Rajkot, Junagadh, Visavadar, Una, Diu.
Diu is an island off the southern tip of Saurashtra, Portuguese until 1961 and still not quite like anywhere else in the region — whitewashed churches, a sea fort, quiet beaches and a pace that drops the moment you cross the bridge. It is 260 km from Rajkot, about five hours through Junagadh and Una.
It is a union territory rather than part of Gujarat, which is the practical reason a lot of people go, and the island is small enough to see properly in two days. Our drivers take this run often enough to know which beaches are worth the time and which get crowded by mid-morning.
What to see on the Rajkot to Diu route
- 01
Diu Fort
Built by the Portuguese in the 1530s, right on the sea, with the lighthouse and a long drop to the water on three sides.
- 02
Nagoa Beach
The horseshoe bay on the south side, the main swimming beach and the busiest. Early morning is the time to go.
- 03
St Paul’s Church
A 1610 Baroque church still in use, with a carved wooden interior that is the best-preserved thing on the island.
- 04
Naida Caves
A quarried maze just outside the town wall, all shafts of light and cut stone. Twenty minutes, and the best photographs on Diu.
- 05
Gir, on the way
Sasan is a straightforward detour from Una. Many customers book Gir and Diu as one trip.
Good to know
- Diu is a union territory, so alcohol rules differ from Gujarat. Buying it to carry back into Gujarat is not legal.
- October to March is the comfortable season. May is hot and the monsoon makes the beaches unusable.
- Two nights is about right — one is not enough to include the fort, the beaches and the church without rushing.
- Gir and Diu combine well: safari in the morning, on the island by evening.
