Route: Rajkot, Morbi, Samakhiali, Gandhidham.
Gandhidham is a planned city with an unusual origin: it was built from nothing after Partition to settle Sindhi families who had lost everything, and named for Gandhi, who backed the scheme. Today it is the business end of Kutch — Kandla, one of India’s busiest cargo ports, sits alongside it, and most of what moves through the district moves through here.
Which is why a large share of this run is work rather than tourism: shipping agents, freight, factory visits, families travelling to Adipur. It is 190 km from Rajkot through Morbi and Samakhiali, about four hours, and it is also the natural first leg of a longer trip into Kutch.
What to see on the Rajkot to Gandhidham route
- 01
Kandla Port
Deendayal Port, one of the largest cargo handlers in India. Most business travel on this road ends here.
- 02
Adipur
The twin township next door, laid out at the same time and still the residential half of the pair.
- 03
Morbi, on the way
Sixty kilometres out — India’s ceramic capital and, for a century before that, its clock-making town.
- 04
Onward to Bhuj and the Rann
Bhuj is about 60 km further, the White Rann at Dhordo roughly 140 km. Gandhidham is a sensible overnight stop before either.
- 05
Swaminarayan Temple
The largest temple in the town and the easiest thing to see if you have an hour between meetings.
Good to know
- Port traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings; allow extra time if your appointment is inside the Kandla complex.
- Kandla is a restricted area and entry needs a pass arranged by whoever you are visiting. We drop at the gate.
- Going on to the Rann? Gandhidham to Dhordo is another three hours, so plan the night here or at Bhuj.
- Morbi is worth a stop if ceramics or sanitaryware is the reason you are travelling at all.
