Route: Rajkot, Surendranagar, Palanpur, Abu Road, Mount Abu.
Mount Abu is where Saurashtra goes when the heat gets serious — the only hill station in Rajasthan, and the nearest cool air to Rajkot. It is 400 km, which is a full day in the car rather than a morning: leave after breakfast and you are on the hill by evening.
The road skirts Ahmedabad instead of going through it, running north through Surendranagar and up the old Palanpur highway. The last stretch is the ghat from Abu Road to the town, a climb of hairpins that is the best twenty minutes of the drive and the one part nobody wants to do after dark.
What to see on the Rajkot to Mount Abu route
- 01
Out of Saurashtra at Surendranagar
The first stretch is the Ahmedabad highway, then the road turns north before the city. Surendranagar and Wadhwan are the last familiar names for a while.
- 02
The Palanpur highway
Flat, fast and dull in the best way — this is the part that makes the timing dependable. Banaskantha fields the whole way to Palanpur.
- 03
Abu Road, where the hill starts
The railhead at the bottom, about 27 km short of the town. Everything above it is forest and ghat.
- 04
Dilwara
The Jain temples just outside the town, carved in marble so fine the ceilings look like lace. The reason a great many people come at all.
- 05
Nakki Lake and Guru Shikhar
The lake sits in the middle of the town; Guru Shikhar, the highest point of the Aravalli range, is a short drive and a flight of steps away.
Good to know
- Leave early. Seven hours plus stops means a 7 am start puts you up the ghat in daylight, which matters on a hairpin road you do not know.
- Ask for the car to stay with you. Mount Abu town is walkable but Dilwara, Guru Shikhar and Achalgarh are not — a car for the days there costs far less than hiring locally each morning.
- Carry warm clothes from November to February. It is the one place in this part of the country where the night genuinely bites.
- May and June are the busy months and hotels fill well before you arrive. Book the rooms first, then tell us the dates.
- An Ertiga or an Innova is the better car for this one — the ghat, the luggage and seven hours all argue against the smallest option.
FAQ
Rajkot to Mount Abu — frequently asked questions
How far is Mount Abu from Rajkot by road?
About 400 km, and roughly seven hours of driving with one or two stops. The route runs north through Surendranagar and Palanpur to Abu Road, then climbs the ghat to the town.
What does a Rajkot to Mount Abu cab cost?
Tell us the dates, how many people and whether you want the car to stay — we quote one fixed all-inclusive figure before you book, covering fuel, driver allowance and taxes. Tolls and parking are at actuals.
Can the same car stay with us in Mount Abu?
Yes, and most families booking this ask for it. The driver stays on the hill with the car, and Dilwara, Guru Shikhar, Achalgarh and Sunset Point all become a matter of saying when you want to leave.
Is it possible as a day trip?
Not sensibly — fourteen hours of driving to spend two hours on a hill. Two nights is the usual booking, and three if you want Udaipur on the same trip.
