Route: Rajkot, Gondal, Jetpur, Upleta, Kutiyana, Porbandar.
Porbandar is a straight run west on NH-27 — 180 km, about three and a half hours, and the same road all the way. It is one of the easier drives out of Rajkot, which is useful, because most people doing it are going for a specific reason rather than a holiday.
The town is where Gandhi was born, and it is also a working fishing port, which are two quite different places sharing one address. Kirti Mandir and the harbour are twenty minutes apart and worth seeing in that order.
What to see on the Rajkot to Porbandar route
- 01
Gondal
Thirty minutes out, and the first place worth stopping. The Naulakha Palace and the royal garages are there if you have time to spare.
- 02
Jetpur
The printing town — cotton laid out drying by the roadside in colours you can see from the highway.
- 03
Upleta and Kutiyana
The last two towns before the coast. Tea stops rather than sights, but they are where the road quietens down.
- 04
Kirti Mandir
The memorial beside the house Gandhi was born in, on 2 October 1869. A swastika on the floor marks the spot. Built in 1950, and still the first thing most visitors come for.
- 05
Sudamapuri and the harbour
The old name of the city, after Krishna's friend Sudama, whose temple is in the old town. The fishing harbour a little further on is the other Porbandar — loud, busy and completely unsentimental.
Good to know
- Kirti Mandir keeps museum hours and closes for lunch, so a morning start from Rajkot works better than an afternoon one.
- Porbandar sits on the coast road between Dwarka and Somnath. If you are doing those anyway, going through Porbandar costs almost nothing extra and saves a separate trip.
- Madhavpur beach is about an hour on, towards Somnath, and is the quieter stop of the two if you want sand rather than a port.
- Tell us if you want the car for the day. The sights are spread out and an hour of waiting is cheaper than two more bookings.
FAQ
Rajkot to Porbandar — frequently asked questions
How far is Porbandar from Rajkot?
About 180 km, roughly three and a half hours on NH-27 through Gondal, Jetpur and Upleta. It is one road the whole way, so the timing is dependable.
What is the Rajkot to Porbandar taxi fare?
We quote a fixed all-inclusive fare for the trip once we know the car and the date — fuel, driver allowance and taxes included, tolls and parking at actuals. Call or send a message and you will have the figure before you book.
Can we visit Dwarka or Somnath on the same trip?
Yes. Porbandar is on the coast road between the two, so it fits into a Dwarka–Porbandar–Somnath run without doubling back. Booked as one outstation journey it is considerably cheaper than three separate drops.
Is a day trip from Rajkot possible?
Comfortably. Three and a half hours each way leaves most of the day in Porbandar, and a good many people do exactly that for Kirti Mandir and the beach.
