Route: Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Himatnagar, Shamlaji, Udaipur.
Udaipur is the long one — 475 km and the better part of a day, nearly all of it on four-lane highway. The road runs through Ahmedabad, then north on NH-48 past Himatnagar and Shamlaji, crossing into Rajasthan after the hills at Ratanpur.
It is a drive worth doing by car rather than train, because the last two hours are the interesting part and because almost nobody goes to Udaipur to stand still. Once there you want a car for the City Palace, Fateh Sagar, the Monsoon Palace and Ranakpur, and it is cheaper to have brought one.
What to see on the Rajkot to Udaipur route
- 01
Through Ahmedabad
The first half is the familiar Rajkot–Ahmedabad road, then the ring road around the city and north onto NH-48.
- 02
Himatnagar and Shamlaji
Where the plain starts to break up. The Shamlaji temple is just off the highway and makes an easy stop if you are stopping anyway.
- 03
Into Rajasthan
The border comes after the hills, and the road from there to Udaipur runs through the Aravallis — the first part of the drive that asks you to look up from your phone.
- 04
Lake Pichola
The City Palace along one side of it, Jag Mandir out on the water, and the reason the city is on everybody's list.
- 05
What is worth the extra day
Ranakpur's marble Jain temple is about two hours north, and Kumbhalgarh's wall runs for miles along the ridge above it. Both are a car trip, not a taxi ride.
Good to know
- Start at six if you want the afternoon in Udaipur. Eight hours of driving plus breaks is a real day and the light goes early in winter.
- Say when you book whether the car is staying. Sightseeing around Udaipur adds up to a lot of kilometres and it is far cheaper arranged as one booking than hired again there.
- Mount Abu is on the same side of the map. Many people do the two together, which turns a long drive into a proper trip rather than a slog.
- The old city streets near the lake are narrow and much of it is closed to cars — the driver will set you down at the edge and wait, which is normal there.
- Take an Ertiga or an Innova. Eight hours with luggage is not a journey for the smallest car.
FAQ
Rajkot to Udaipur — frequently asked questions
How long does Rajkot to Udaipur take by car?
About eight hours for 475 km, allowing for two short stops. Almost all of it is four-lane highway through Ahmedabad, Himatnagar and Shamlaji.
What is the Rajkot to Udaipur cab fare?
We quote one fixed all-inclusive fare once we know the dates, the car and whether it is one way or a round trip. Fuel, driver allowance and taxes are included; tolls and parking are at actuals.
Can we stop at Mount Abu on the way?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. Mount Abu sits off the same highway, so adding a night there costs a detour rather than a second trip.

We do — that leg is 260 km on its own and has its own fixed fare, which suits anyone flying into Ahmedabad and carrying on north.
