Route: Rajkot, Chotila, Bagodara, Tarapur, Vadodara.
Vadodara was the seat of the Gaekwads, and they spent like it. Laxmi Vilas Palace is still a private residence and still roughly four times the footprint of Buckingham Palace, which gives you a sense of the city — a former princely capital that turned into a university town and an industrial centre without losing the first part.
It is 290 km from Rajkot, about five hours, most of it on the expressway once you reach Bagodara. It is also the obvious base for the Statue of Unity, which is a further two hours on, and for Champaner-Pavagadh, a UNESCO site an hour east that far too few people make time for.
What to see on the Rajkot to Vadodara route
- 01
Laxmi Vilas Palace
Built in 1890 and still lived in by the royal family. The durbar hall and the grounds are open to visitors; the audio guide is worth taking.
- 02
Champaner-Pavagadh
A UNESCO World Heritage Site about 50 km east — a pre-Mughal city of mosques and stepwells below a hill temple reached by ropeway.
- 03
Sayaji Baug
A hundred acres in the middle of the city, with a museum, a planetarium and a working miniature railway.
- 04
Kirti Mandir
The Gaekwad family cenotaph, with murals by Nandalal Bose and an East-meets-West architecture that is odd and rather good.
- 05
Statue of Unity
Kevadia is about two hours on from Vadodara, which makes this route the usual first leg of that trip.
Good to know
- Laxmi Vilas is closed on Mondays and for private functions; check before building a day around it.
- Champaner needs half a day of its own. The Pavagadh ropeway queue is long at weekends.
- If the Statue of Unity is the real destination, say so when booking and we will quote the whole trip rather than the Vadodara leg alone.
- Vadodara is a genuine food city — ask the driver where to eat rather than searching for it.
FAQ
Rajkot to Vadodara — frequently asked questions
What is the Rajkot to Vadodara cab fare?
From ₹4,000 one-way in a sedan and ₹4,500 in an Ertiga, with fuel, driver allowance and taxes included. Tolls and parking at actuals. Round trips are quoted on request.
How far is Vadodara from Rajkot?
290 km, about five hours — NH-47 as far as Bagodara, then expressway for the rest.
Can I go on to the Statue of Unity from Vadodara?
Yes, Kevadia is roughly two hours further on and this is the normal way to reach it. Most people book the two together as an overnight trip rather than trying both in a day.
Is Champaner worth the detour?
If you have the time, very much so — it is a UNESCO site and unusually intact. Allow half a day including the Pavagadh ropeway, and tell us in advance so the day is quoted with it included.
