Route: Rajkot, Gondal, Jetpur, Keshod, Veraval.

Veraval is the town people actually arrive at when they say they are going to Somnath — the temple is six kilometres further along the shore. It is the port, the railway station and most of the hotels, and it is 185 km from Rajkot, about three and a half hours.

That makes it two bookings in one. Some people are going to the temple and the town is only where they sleep; others are coming for the harbour, which is one of the largest fishing ports in the country and nothing like a tourist stop. Either way the road is the same.

What to see on the Rajkot to Veraval route

  1. 01

    Gondal and Jetpur

The first hour on NH-27, past Gondal's palaces and Jetpur's drying cotton, before the road turns south.

  2. 02

    The Keshod road

NH-151 from the Jetpur bypass, running down through Keshod. Quieter than the national highway and in good condition.

  3. 03

    The fishing harbour

Hundreds of boats tied up gunwale to gunwale, and a fish market that starts before dawn. Worth half an hour even if you came for the temple.

  4. 04

    Somnath, six kilometres on

The temple on the shore, rebuilt more times than any other in India. Close enough that most people stay in Veraval and go across for the evening aarti.

  5. 05

    Bhalka Tirth

Between the two towns, where Krishna is said to have been struck by the hunter's arrow. A small place, easy to fit in on the way across.

Good to know

  • Say whether you want Veraval or the temple itself — they are six kilometres apart and the driver will take you to the right door.
  • The evening aarti at Somnath is the one to aim for. Leaving Rajkot by midday gets you there with time to spare.
  • Ask for the car to wait if you are going across for the temple. Transport between Veraval and Somnath after dark is thin.
  • The harbour is at its best very early. If that is why you are coming, stay the night rather than driving down in the morning.
  • Gir is an hour and a half inland from here, so a Somnath trip and a safari fit into the same booking.
