The trip

The Statue of Unity is 182 metres of Sardar Patel standing over the Narmada, and the tallest statue in the world by a wide margin. Photographs do not really prepare you for it — the viewing gallery is at 153 metres, inside the chest, and the lift up is part of the experience.

What surprises most people is how much else Kevadia has grown around it. There is a jungle safari, a cactus garden, an arboretum, a river rafting stretch and the Sardar Sarovar Dam itself, and getting between them eats a day on its own.

Four days from Rajkot covers it without rushing: a night at Vadodara on the way, two at Kevadia, and the run home. It also leaves room for Champaner, a UNESCO site an hour from Vadodara that is genuinely worth the stop.

Itinerary

Day by day

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Rajkot to Vadodara

The 290 km run east, NH-47 as far as Bagodara and then expressway — about five hours. Afternoon at Laxmi Vilas Palace, which is still the Gaekwad family home and roughly four times the size of Buckingham Palace. Evening at Sayaji Baug. Overnight in Vadodara.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Vadodara to Kevadia, and the statue

Ninety kilometres south to Kevadia, about two hours. Afternoon at the Statue of Unity itself — the museum at the base, then the viewing gallery lift. Stay for the laser and sound show projected onto the statue after dark. Overnight at Kevadia.

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Kevadia in full

A day for everything around the statue: the Jungle Safari park, the Cactus Garden and Arogya Van, the Valley of Flowers along the river, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam viewpoint. The Ekta Cruise on the Narmada runs in the afternoon if the water level allows. Overnight at Kevadia.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Champaner, then Rajkot

Leave early and break the return at Champaner-Pavagadh — a pre-Mughal city of mosques and stepwells below a hill temple, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back on the road by mid-afternoon for Rajkot, arriving in the evening.

What's included

  • Air-conditioned vehicle with a driver for all four days
  • Fuel, driver allowance, driver’s food and accommodation
  • All road tolls, state taxes and parking
  • Pickup and drop at your home address

What's not

  • Your hotels and meals
  • Statue of Unity entry and viewing gallery tickets
  • Jungle Safari, cruise and other attraction tickets at Kevadia
  • Pavagadh ropeway, and any guide fees

Before you go

  • Book the viewing gallery ticket online before you travel. The daily allocation sells out, particularly at weekends and in holiday weeks.
  • Private vehicles stop at the Ekta Nagar parking; shuttle buses run from there to the statue. Our driver drops you at the shuttle point.
  • The laser show is after dark and is the best part of the evening — plan the day around staying for it.
  • Kevadia is busiest from October to February. A weekday visit is markedly calmer than a Saturday.
  • Champaner needs three or four hours to be worth stopping at. If you would rather not rush it, take a fifth day.

FAQ

Common questions

How much is the Statue of Unity tour package from Rajkot?

From ₹18,000 for four days in an Ertiga and ₹36,000 in a 13-seater Force Urbania. That is the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and taxes for the whole trip. Hotels, meals and attraction tickets are separate.

Are Statue of Unity tickets included?

No, and we would suggest booking them yourself online in advance rather than at the gate. The viewing gallery has a daily limit and it does sell out. Entry to the grounds and the gallery are priced separately.

Can this be done in fewer days?

It can be done in three if you skip Champaner and go straight through to Kevadia on day one, but that is nine hours of driving on the first day. Four is the version we would actually recommend, and it is what the price above covers.

Does the car take us around Kevadia itself?

Up to the point private vehicles are allowed. Kevadia runs its own shuttle service between the attractions and the statue, so the driver drops you at the shuttle point and collects you there. Everything outside that, including Vadodara and Champaner, is in the car.
