Route: Rajkot, Gondal, Jetpur, Junagadh.
Junagadh sits at the foot of Girnar, a hundred kilometres south of Rajkot and about two hours by road through Gondal and Jetpur. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Gujarat and the layers show — Ashokan edicts carved in the third century BC, a fort that has been besieged for two thousand years, and Indo-Islamic mausoleums in the middle of town.
Short enough to be an easy day trip, and the ropeway has changed what is possible: the climb to the Girnar summit used to mean 4,000-odd steps and most of a day, and now takes about eight minutes each way.
What to see on the Rajkot to Junagadh route
- 01
Girnar Ropeway
Asia’s longest at roughly 2.3 km, up to the Ambaji temple near the summit. Queues build fast at weekends.
- 02
Uparkot Fort
On a plateau above the town, with the Adi Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo stepwells cut straight down into the rock.
- 03
Mahabat Maqbara
The mausoleum of the Nawabs, with spiral staircases winding round the outside of its minarets. Unlike anything else in Gujarat.
- 04
Ashokan Rock Edicts
A single boulder carrying inscriptions from 250 BC, on the road towards Girnar.
- 05
Gondal, on the way
Forty kilometres from Rajkot — the Naulakha Palace and the royal vintage car collection are both by the highway.
Good to know
- Book the ropeway online where you can. Weekend and holiday queues at the counter run to hours.
- Girnar is still a climb if you walk it — start before dawn and carry water.
- Junagadh is 65 km from Sasan Gir, so the two make a natural overnight pairing.
- The town is compact but the sights are spread out; keeping the cab for the day beats arranging autos at each stop.
FAQ
Rajkot to Junagadh — frequently asked questions
What is the Rajkot to Junagadh taxi fare?
From ₹1,800 one-way in a sedan and ₹2,300 in an Ertiga, including fuel, driver allowance and taxes. Tolls and parking at actuals. Round trips are quoted on request.
How far is Junagadh from Rajkot?
100 km, about two hours by road through Gondal and Jetpur.
Is Junagadh a good day trip from Rajkot?
One of the best. Leaving at 6 am gets you the ropeway before the queues, Uparkot and Mahabat Maqbara in the afternoon, and home by evening. Keep the car for the day — the sights are too spread out to walk between.
Can you take us to the Girnar ropeway base?
Yes, the car drops at the base station and waits. Say so when booking and we will include the waiting time in the quoted fare rather than adding it afterwards.
