Route: Rajkot, Morbi, Samakhiali, Bhachau, Kutch (Bhuj).

Kutch is the largest district in India and nothing else in Gujarat looks like it — a salt desert that floods every monsoon and dries to a white crust every winter. Bhuj, the natural base, is 235 km from Rajkot, about five hours through Morbi and Samakhiali.

Almost everyone travels between November and February, when the Rann Utsav tent city is running and the White Rann is at its best under a full moon. Distances inside Kutch are substantial — Dholavira is another five hours past Bhuj — so having your own car and driver for the days you are there matters far more here than on a shorter route.

What to see on the Rajkot to Kutch (Bhuj) route

  1. 01

    White Rann at Dhordo

About 80 km north of Bhuj. Salt flats to the horizon, best at sunset and on full-moon nights. A permit is required and is arranged at the checkpost.

  2. 02

    Rann Utsav

The winter tent city at Dhordo, roughly November to February — crafts, folk music and the desert on your doorstep.

  3. 03

    Kalo Dungar

The highest point in Kutch, with a view across the entire Rann and the well-known Dattatreya temple at the top.

  4. 04

    Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal

Bhuj’s royal palaces, the mirrored hall and the Gothic clock tower, both still bearing marks of the 2001 earthquake.

  5. 05

    The craft villages

Nirona for rogan art, Bhujodi for weaving, Ajrakhpur for block printing — all within an hour of Bhuj.

Good to know

  • A permit is needed for the Rann at Dhordo. It is issued at the Bhirandiyara checkpost and you will need photo ID for everyone in the car.
  • Full-moon nights in winter are the most popular and the most booked. Plan several weeks ahead if that is what you want.
  • Summer in Kutch is genuinely severe and the Rann is under water through the monsoon. November to February is the season.
  • Dholavira is a Harappan site and a UNESCO listing, but it is five hours beyond Bhuj. Treat it as its own day, not an add-on.

FAQ

Rajkot to Kutch (Bhuj) — frequently asked questions

What is the Rajkot to Bhuj taxi fare?

From ₹3,500 one-way to Bhuj in a sedan and ₹4,500 in an Ertiga, with fuel, driver allowance and taxes included. Tolls and parking at actuals. For Kutch we usually suggest the Ertiga — the distances inside the district add up. Round trips and multi-day hire are quoted on request.

How far is Kutch from Rajkot?

Bhuj is 250 km from Rajkot, about five hours via Morbi and Samakhiali. Dhordo and the White Rann are a further 80 km north of Bhuj.

Can you take us to the Rann and Kalo Dungar?

Yes. Both are well within reach of Bhuj and the car stays with you. Tell us your dates and we will quote the drive plus the days of local running as one price rather than charging them separately.

When is the best time to visit the Rann?

November to February. The Rann Utsav runs through that window, the weather is comfortable, and the salt flats are dry and white. Through the monsoon the Rann is underwater.
